Interior Design Is Not About Rooms. It's About People.
Updated: 3 days ago
Interior design is about people, not rooms. My approach is to understand who will live in a space, with their routines, habits and memories, before choosing a style, a colour or a piece of furniture. This article explains that approach, why beautiful rooms can still feel empty, and why a home designed around a person lasts longer than one designed around a trend.
At a glance:
Good design starts with the person, not the style.
A home should support how you live, not just impress from a distance.
Beautiful, matching, expensive rooms can still feel like a showroom.
Trends change. Identity and purpose last.
Art is part of a home’s identity, so choose it for what it means to you.
The goal is a space that feels unmistakably yours.

A home should support the way people live, not just impress from a distance. Thoughtful design begins with understanding the lifestyle behind the space.
Why is interior design about people, not rooms?
You can buy beautiful furniture, follow every design trend and recreate your saved Pinterest images perfectly, and still feel that something is wrong. Not because the room is poorly designed, but because it doesn’t feel like you. That is where my approach begins. For me, design has never been about filling a room with beautiful things. It is about understanding the people who will live there: their routines, habits, memories and the small details that make a house feel like home. That is why I often say: I don’t design spaces. I translate people.
Why do beautiful rooms still feel empty?
I have seen many homes that look impressive in photographs but feel strangely empty when you step inside. Everything is arranged, everything matches and everything is expensive, yet nothing feels personal. The space could belong to anyone. A home should not feel like a showroom. It should be a reflection of the people who live in it: the books you keep, the artwork you choose, the materials you are drawn to, the atmosphere you create. Those things tell a story more powerful than any trend.

What questions should you ask before you design a home?
Most people start by asking what furniture to buy or what style to follow. I start with a simple question: who are you? Not what style you like, not what colour you prefer, not which trend is popular. Then I ask:
How do you start your mornings?
Where do you enjoy your coffee?
How do you relax after a long day?
Which spaces make you feel comfortable?
Which spaces inspire you?
Good design is not about a room that looks impressive in a photograph. It is about a space that supports your daily life. A truly successful interior feels effortless because it was designed around the person living in it. That is where identity lives, and where meaningful design begins.
What is the difference between trends and identity?
Trends come and go: what feels modern today may feel outdated tomorrow. A home built around personality and purpose stays relevant, because it was never designed to impress strangers. It was designed to support a life. This is one of the biggest differences between decorating and designing. Decorating focuses on objects. Design focuses on people. When your decisions are guided by who you are instead of what is popular, your home gains something trends cannot provide: authenticity. And authenticity never goes out of style.

How can artwork become part of a home’s identity?
Artwork is one of the most personal choices in a home, because it carries colour, mood and meaning in a single piece. It can express who lives there, and it can set the atmosphere of a whole room. If you want a piece that could belong to no one else, we create custom artwork from your photo or your own brief, including portraits of a person, family or pet, full-body compositions and lifestyle scenes, made to your size and colour palette. See our Art Services page. For finished compositions, browse the Nrdesign Studio collections. To read more about designing around one artwork, see Art-Led Luxury Interior Design.

What should a home make you feel?
When someone enters a thoughtfully designed home, they may notice the furniture, admire the artwork and appreciate the details. What they remember is how the space made them feel: calm, comfortable, inspired, at ease. That feeling is not created by accident. It is created by intention. Great design is less about decoration and more about connection: to your lifestyle, to your values, and to the feeling you want every time you walk through the door.
At Nrdesign Studio, every project begins with understanding the person before designing the space. The goal is never to create a room that looks like everyone else’s. It is to create a space that feels unmistakably yours.
A home should not simply impress you. It should recognize you. And when that happens, design becomes much more than decoration. It becomes a reflection of who you are.
