Why Oversized Wall Art Matters: Scale, Impact and Placement
Updated: 3 days ago
Oversized wall art matters because scale decides whether a wall feels finished. One large artwork gives a room a clear focal point, balances big architecture such as tall ceilings and wide windows, and often looks more refined than several small pieces. At Nrdesign Studio, we create large-scale canvas wall art for homes, hotels and commercial interiors. This guide explains why scale works and how to use it.
At a glance: - A large canvas creates one clear focal point, so the rest of the room can stay calm. - Undersized art is the most common mistake. Above furniture, aim for roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of its width. - Large artwork balances tall ceilings, wide walls and big windows. - Rolled, stretched or floating-frame canvas can suit different rooms. - If a standard size does not fit your wall, custom sizing is available.
What counts as oversized wall art?
In practice, we call a canvas oversized when its longest side is about 90 cm / 36 in or more, or when it spans most of the furniture or wall it hangs on. Our standard sizes go up to 45×60 in (114×152 cm) in portrait or landscape, and up to 52.5×52.5 in (133×133 cm) square in a floating frame. Custom dimensions are available beyond that.

Why does oversized wall art make a room feel more considered?
- It creates a focal point. A single large artwork gives the eye somewhere to rest.
- It balances the architecture. It can offset tall ceilings, large windows, or stone and panelled walls that would make a small picture look lost.
- It simplifies the room. One substantial piece usually looks more refined than several small ones competing for attention.
- It sets the palette. The colours in the artwork can guide furniture, textiles and lighting.
How big should oversized wall art be?
Above a sofa, console or bed, aim for roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width. In tall or double-height rooms, go larger or choose a vertical format so the piece does not look lost. Before you order, mark the size on the wall with painter's tape and live with it for a day. For measurements by sofa width, read our guide to choosing the right wall art size for your living room.
Where does oversized wall art work best?
- Living rooms: above the sofa or on the dominant wall.
- Entrance halls and staircases: seen on the move, so a bold piece makes a strong first impression.
- Bedrooms: above the bed, where a small piece can make the wall look unfinished.
- Hotels, restaurants and offices: lobbies, reception areas, lounges and entrance foyers, where a statement piece helps set the mood for guests.
What should you check before you buy?
1. The width of the furniture and the wall.
2. Ceiling height and the distance you will usually view it from.
3. Orientation: horizontal suits a long sofa, vertical suits a narrow wall or adds height.
4. Format and quality: our artworks are printed on 400gsm artist-grade cotton canvas, as rolled canvas, stretched canvas or floating-frame canvas in six frame finishes. The details are in our Sizes & Formats guide.
5. Lighting, so the colours and texture are shown without glare.
When you hang it, use fixings rated for the artwork's weight and your wall type, and ask a professional for very large framed pieces.

What if the standard size does not fit your wall?
Custom sizing is available for walls that need a specific width or proportion. For hotels, restaurants and design projects, we also create custom artwork around a space's scale, lighting and colour palette, and we can work from mood boards and 3D renders.
